Dallas Stars’ Jamie Benn (14) is stopped by Vegas Golden Knights goalie Robin Lehner (90) asGolden Knights’ Zach Whitecloud (2) defends during third-period NHL Western Conference final playoff game action in Edmonton, Alberta, Monday, Sept. 14, 2020.

The NHL and the players’ association today announced safety protocols and some key dates for the 2020-2021 season.

The league announced July 9 as the last possible day of the Stanley Cup Final, April 12 as the trade deadline and May 11 as the first day of the playoffs.

The league is expected to release the complete schedule of games on Wednesday.

As previously announced, the season will begin Jan. 13. Training camp for the Golden Knights begins Jan. 3 at City National Arena. Training camp will be closed to the public.

The league will test players daily for the coronavirus during training camp and for the first four weeks of the season, at which point it will re-evaluate whether testing can be dialed back.

A positive test will result in isolation protocols set forth by local governments.

Coaches will be required to wear face coverings whenever not on the ice in practice, including on the benches for games.

On the road, players will only be permitted to go to the hotel and rink. Each city will have one designated hotel for visiting teams, so league safety protocols can be applied consistently.

Hosting fans for games will be at the team’s discretion. To begin the season, the Golden Knights are not expected to have fans in the arena for home games.

There will also be a minor rule change where a player does not have to physically have his skate on the blue line to be considered onside. This will help eliminate confusion during replay reviews.

As for the offseason, the expansion draft for the Seattle Kraken will take place July 21. The Golden Knights are exempt from losing a player in the expansion draft.

The NHL Draft will begin July 23, and free agency opens on July 28.
