Raiders Mini Camp

Las Vegas Raiders safety Karl Joseph (43) pulls in a pass in front of tight end Nick Bowers (82) during a practice at the Raiders facility in Henderson Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

The Raiders released a pair of veteran free agents signed in the offseason, wide receiver John Brown and safety Karl Joseph, as part of the NFL’s required final roster cuts on Tuesday.

Brown and Joseph were the biggest names from the 80-man roster not to survive the cut down to the final 53 heading into the regular season. Joseph might have been the biggest surprise considering his presumed spot went to relatively unknown third-year player Roderic Teamer.

The Tulane product played under Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley for one season with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019 but wasn’t on a roster last season.

No one specifically took Brown’s spot, as the Raiders will go into the season with only five receivers. The expectation was that if they released Brown, they’d keep either Dillon Stoner, DJ Turner or Keelan Doss but all three of those players were waived.

They could be added to the 16-man practice squad if they clear waivers. The same goes for running backs Trey Ragas and B.J. Emmons, two undrafted rookies who also didn’t make the final cut.

With Jalen Richard nursing a foot injury, there was a strong possibility he could land on injured reserve and open a spot for Ragas and Emmons. But the Raiders opted not to rule out Richard for the season as he was on the roster along with fellow injured players Nicholas Morrow and Javin White at linebacker.

Isaiah Johnson and Dallin Leavitt, two players who contributed last year, were also waived next to Joseph in the defensive backfield.

Another unforeseen move came at tight end where the Raiders kept second-year player Nick Bowers over Derek Carrier, a key special teams player for the last three seasons.

There’s still more maneuvering to be done before the Raiders kick off the season against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football on Sept. 13 at Allegiant Stadium, particularly with the injured players. The Raiders will likely make at least some of them inactive and be able to pull up players from the practice squad to the active roster.

But for now, find the Raiders’ first official 53-man roster of the season.
