Ikalewa Paaoao had a pair of interception returns for a touchdown tonight for the Liberty football team in a 55-0 win against visiting Centennial in a rematch of the 2019 state championship game.

Germie Bernard added a punt return of 70 yards and a 40-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Colin Gregorio passed for a 17-yard score to Anthony Jones and rushed for a 5-yard touchdown.

Elijah Bungat contributed an 85-yard interception return and Champ Kapanui scampered for a 5-yard scoring run.

Liberty, the defending state champions, improved to 6-1 overall. For many of the victories, the Patriots have relied on backups to carry the way. Gregorio, for example, is the second-string quarterback — and also a wide receiver and defensive back.

“That is one of the benefits of having a big program with 70 kids on varsity — a lot of depth,” Liberty coach Rich Muraco said.
