Clark High School football coach Deumaine Reeder missed a few practices this week after his wife was rushed to the hospital on Monday with internal bleeding.
By the end of the week, she instructed him to leave the hospital and rejoin the team for their league game with Durango. The players responded with a convincing 42-7 win, saying the victory was for their beloved coach and his family.
“That’s the culture of our program and what we are trying to build,” said Reeder, whose wife is still hospitalized but expected to be OK. “When the leader is out, they learned to step up and do what they have to do.”
Reeder was at the hospital around the clock, only leaving for a few hours to tend to his children and get them to school. Football was a secondary concern, even after the Chargers last week lost their first game of the season.
Lebon Makwashim, who didn’t play last week in a loss to Las Vegas, had two scoring receptions from Mason King and is “the difference maker on our team,” Reeder said. King also threw a touchdown pass to Matthew Barrientos Rubio and rushed for a score.
D’on Williams had an interception return of about 60 yards for a score.
