Colton Jones returned a fumble for a touchdown tonight for the Spring Valley football team in a 16-6 victory against rival Bonanza in the Banner Game.

The Spring Valley defense surrendered a touchdown in the final seconds or it would have recorded its third shutout of the season.

“The defense has just been lights out. They have been carrying us,” Spring Valley coach Marcus Teal said.

Jaden Linzie had a short touchdown run and Maddox Conklin kicked a 33-yard field goal, helping Spring Valley win its fifth straight game in the series with Bonanza.

When Spring Valley opened in 2004, it took many of initial student body and staff from nearby Bonanza — including Teal, who spent two years on the Bonanza staff. The schools have played annually for a banner.

“We told the kids at the beginning of the week, ‘(The banner) doesn’t look like much, but there is a whole bunch of meaning behind it and we don’t want to give it up,’” Teal said.
