Sunset Semifinal Football 2012

There was a time not too long ago that when the prep football teams at Palo Verde and Bishop Gorman played, it was a standing room-only affair.

Gorman’s rise to prominence in Nevada — and nationally — started with winning bragging rights away from their Summerlin neighbor, Palo Verde. The Panthers’ last win over Gorman was in 2008, when they won in blowout fashion. Gorman won in 2009 and 2010, but those games were mostly evenly matched.

Since then, the rivalry has turned into a lopsided affair favoring Gorman, with all of the wins in recent years coming via the mercy rule of a running clock.

What’s left of the grudge match continues at 6 tonight in a class 5A game at Gorman.

Two 5A games will be more closely contested, including a showdown between Canyon Springs and visiting Foothill that could go down to the wire. Also, old 3A foes Desert Pines and Faith Lutheran renew their rivalry, which in the mid-2010s brought some back-and-forth playoff games.

In the class 4A, the top three contenders of undefeated Silverado, Coronado and Shadow Ridge are jockeying for playoff position, and each have winnable games. In the class 3A, the winner of Pahrump Valley and host Eldorado will have an inside track at winning the Desert League and claiming the division’s No. 1 playoff seed.

After tonight, there’s just one week left in the regular season. That means many teams are fighting this week for their postseason fate.
