Bishop Gorman Beats Saint Louis (Hawaii), 42-21

Steve Marcus

Bishop Gorman running back Camron Barfield (3) celebrates a touchdown with wide receiver Zachariah Branch (1) during a game against Saint Louis High School (Hawaii) at Bishop Gorman Friday, Aug. 20, 2021.

When the Bishop Gorman football team squandered a 17-point lead in the final 67 seconds Sept. 17 at Hamilton of Arizona, coach Brent Browner called the loss humbling and sensed his players learned a valuable lesson.

Whatever the case, the Gaels have certainly been motivated.

Gorman hasn’t surrendered a point since that night in Arizona and will put its streak of four consecutive shutouts on the line tonight at Foothill in the regular season finale. The question isn’t whether Gorman will beat Foothill, it’s whether the Gaels will surrender any points — they haven’t been scored on by Vegas competition.

Gorman, many feel, is the favorite to win the state championship. But first they’ll need to win the league title tonight to earn the No. 1 postseason seed.

It’s not the only game with playoff implications tonight.

In the class 4A, Desert Oasis hosts Silverado with the winner capturing the league crown. And in the class 3A, Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley play in the annual Hammer Game.

Some games will have no impact on the playoff picture. Take the Clark Chargers, who regardless of the outcome tonight against Basic plays Coronado next week to open the postseason.

But no players will label a game as meaningless, especially after the canceled 2020 season of the pandemic.
