Win and advance.
Lose and turn in your gear.
That is what’s at stake tonight as high school football programs throughout Nevada begin the postseason, including defending large-school state champion Liberty hosting Legacy and state-favorite Bishop Gorman taking on visiting Faith Lutheran.
And in the game of the night, Desert Pines and Arbor View renew their rivalry — again. Earlier in the season, Arbor View overcame a two-touchdown deficit to beat Desert Pines on a 2-point conversion in the final minute.
COVID protocols have canceled some games in recent months and brought certain limitations to the way a week of preparation looks and feels, but you won’t hear the players complain. After the 2020 season was lost to the pandemic, simply having a playoff game is reason for celebration. Games are played on Thursday this week because of the state Nevada Day holiday on Friday.
It’s more than Gorman and Liberty fighting for a title. The reimagined class 4A starts its playoffs tonight with Basic hosting Chaparral, Sierra Vista traveling to Cimarron-Memorial and Desert Oasis taking on Durango.
In previous seasons, these schools would miss the playoffs or have no chance at making a run. Now, they are hosting postseason games, and that’s pretty cool.
