When the Foothill football team started preparing earlier in the week for its playoff game tonight against Green Valley, coach Vernon Brown didn’t bother watching film of last week’s game — a humbling 59-0 loss to state power Bishop Gorman.

“We just stayed the course,” Brown said. “I know it sounds crazy, but we wanted another chance to play Bishop Gorman.”

The Falcons will get that opportunity next week in the semifinals of the Southern Regional playoffs after a 27-20 win tonight against Green Valley in the first round.

Kendric Thomas had a pair of long touchdown runs for Foothill, who trailed by a touchdown on three separate occasions before pulling away. Jack Thow had two late touchdown passes for the Falcons, hooking up with Jayden Robertson and then Michael Gazzana for the decisive points.

“We knew Green Valley would come out ready to play because they are well coached,” Brown said. “Anytime Green Valley and Foothill plays, it’s a good game and back and forth.”

The game came down to the final play, when Robertson and Amarion Meshack batted down Green Valley’s final heave to preserve the Foothill win and a date next week at Gorman.
