The Moapa Valley football team didn’t plan to lean this heavily on its rushing attack tonight against SLAM Academy in the 3A state quarterfinals.

But the Pirates couldn’t be stopped in scoring all five of their touchdowns on the ground in a 49-14 win.

Landon Wrzesinski was the workhorse, tallying 226 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. Moapa Valley only passed once in the second half.

“Our game plan wasn’t really to pound it like we did,” Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis said. “But they wouldn’t stop us so we kept running.”

Austin Heiselbetz got into the action with five rushes for 41 yards and two touchdowns, and Ethan Stankosky had a 17-yard score.

Moapa Valley’s state semifinal opponent won’t be determined until quarterfinal action in Northern Nevada concludes on Saturday.
