Women’s Soccer Team Complains of Inequality, Adidas Spells Goalie’s Name Wrong

A pair of custom Adidas cleats created for the Germany women’s national team’s goalkeeper is making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult was recently spotted prepping for the World Cup in her new Predator 19+ cleats, but something wasn’t quite right. Above the Three Stripes branding lies a personalized nameplate bearing the German flag, but a closer look reveals a typo—her name is spelled “Schulth.” 

What may otherwise be a miniscule error has been magnified after a recent women’s World Cup commercial in which the team states “we are playing for a nation that does not know our names.” The spot, which was intended to shed light on gender inequality in the sport, is now taking on a new meaning.

Despite the faux pas, Schult tells sportbuzzer.de she’s taking it in stride. “I can laugh about that, mistakes are human, they happen to me too.” According to the outlet, Adidas is already working on a fix and plans to have Schult outfitted in a new, corrected pair ahead of Saturday’s opener against China.

Adidas did not immediately respond to Sole Collector’s request for comment.
