Golden Knights Canucks VGK

Vancouver Canucks’ Elias Pettersson (40) celebrates a goal on Vegas Golden Knights goalie Robin Lehner (90), next to Brayden McNabb (3) during the third period of Game 5 of an NHL hockey second-round playoff series, Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2020, in Edmonton, Ontario. The Golden Knights couldn’t finish off the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, and there will be at least one more game in the second round.

Vegas scored first but the lead lasted just 24 seconds before the Canucks tied it, then grabbed the lead themselves not long after. It was the first time this postseason the Golden Knights scored first but lost, and did so 2-1 in Game 5 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Game 6 will be at 6:45 p.m. Thursday night on NBC Sports Network.

More than half the game went by before either team broke the 0-0 tie. Shea Theodore took care of it at the 15:12 mark on the second, walking in from the blue line on the power play, deking around three Canucks and roofing it to give Vegas a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Knights didn’t get to celebrate long. They held the Canucks to just seven shots for the first 45 minutes of the game, but 24 seconds after Theodore’s goal, Brock Boeser ran down the ice and beat Robin Lehner on the rush, evening the score, where it stood going to the second intermission.

The Canucks came out in the third looking better than they have all series. An Elias Pettersson tip in front of Lehner gave the Canucks the lead at 3:19, and they didn’t give it up.

Vegas led in shots on goal, 44-17. Vancouver goalie backup goalie Thatcher Demko picked up the victory in the first playoff start of his career.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
