The Run-in’ Rebels head onto the court for their season opener against Montana State at the Thomas & Mack Center Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020.

UNLV’s basketball game against Eastern Washington on Wednesday has been canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test within the UNLV program.

Eastern Washington coach Shantay Legans relayed the cancelation to the media on Tuesday morning. UNLV later issued a press release confirming the cancelation; the school did not specify whether the positive test was for a player or a staff member.

The Eastern Washington game is the only activity affected by the positive test. No other games have been canceled or postponed yet, and the program is continuing to practice.

It’s an untimely development for UNLV, which is coming off its first victory of the season, a 68-58 triumph at Kansas State that infused the program with some confidence after a winless showing at the Maui Invitational. With Eastern Washington now off the board, UNLV has just one more non-conference game remaining, against Pepperdine on Monday at the Thomas & Mack Center.

It is not known which player tested positive, and the Mountain West has not publicly released specific protocols for basketball testing, so it is unknown how long a positive player would have to sit out before returning. But assuming it’s 10-14 days, it could jeopardize UNLV’s first conference series, Dec. 20 and 22 at Wyoming.
