Members of the Legacy High School football team are pictured during the Las Vegas Sun’s high school football media day at the Red Rock Resort on August 3rd, 2021. They include, from left, Lonnel Jones, Lennel Jones and Damarion Holloway.

As Legacy’s Raekwon Weatherspoon broke free for a 74-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter Friday night against Las Vegas, first-year coach Zach Monticelli’s mind was already decided.

The Longhorns would be going for two points and the win, and Damarion Holloway rushed up the middle for the successful conversion for the 8-7 victory.

It was Monticelli’s first career win.

“We went for the win. I knew that’s what we were doing the entire time,” he said.

Las Vegas scored early in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead, but the Legacy defense held strong the remainder of the night. Micah McGirt recorded an interception and Aoese Mauga had a pair of sacks.

After a long offseason and short roster because of ineligibilities, earning a victory in a hard-fought game was emotional for the players and coaches.

“We have a bunch that loves each other and doesn’t quit,” the coach said. “I am proud of each and every one of them.”
