I thought about this song a lot when I was younger. All these important people and events- some that disappeared into the sands of time- others that changed the world forever. So much has happened in the span of the last 34 years- we felt like a little system update might be fun. Hope you like our take on it…

Metroid? It wasn't in the news zeitgeist..was it? I got the Pokemon reference because I lived through the launch/Poke-mania but the Metroid mention confused me.

I love this and loved the original BUT the thing I like about the original that this one missed was that the original was in Chronological order. I could tell listening to the original, because it was the lyrics I could remember, when I was old enough to remember the event.

OMG the images from Brazil! Bolso with the burning background and Lula at the inauguration ceremony just after. It's so quick but so good, I just got it rewatching at 0.75 and even this way is quick.
It scares me how many things happened in 34 years, the realization that you are not studying history but living it.

Too bad it's not in order like the original, other than that, I love it! Should definitely be a thing every 30 or so years!

Not in chronological order and they don't have the correct syllable count, not poetic. Disappointing.

I'm 36 so born in 1986. Every lyric in this song is my life. I have chills thinking all happened and I remember it. From 9/11 Y2K to MySpace. Wow! Great modern cover Fall out boy!

One thing worth noting is that the events listed in the original "We Didn't Start the Fire" were in chronological order. This one isn't. I also am confused why COVID, the War in Ukraine, and January 6th weren't mentioned. The band did mention in an interview that they intentionally omitted COVID and left it to "The next generation's update," but if this was really meant to cover 1989-2023, I really see no reason why you should omit COVID. Though the change from "We tried to fight it" to "We're trying to fight it" is a good one.

one thing that's missing from this is the Billy Joel version put the events in chronological order, while this one is sort of hodgepodge, which, I understand, but it makes this version feel just a bit less coherent.

Ya know what I just realized? The Suez Canal just can't catch a break lol. It's now been in two of these songs, here's hoping they don't decide to make it 3/3 within the next 30 years

I think it would’ve been better if the events were in order but overall this is great

I mean I like it, but it’s not hard enough! Billy Joel’s hits harder, and Fall Out Boy made it sound like a freaking teeny bopper song.

    July 5, 2023 at 2:07 pm

Nowhere near as brilliant as Billy Joel’s version.
    1. Not chronological.
    2. Left out some major details.
    3. Skipped over so much & it is majorly, skewed to his perspective.
Sorry. Decent attempt but It’ll NEVER be as impactful as Billy’s. I don’t care for his selection of ppl he thinks impacted us.

The Billy Joel song was one of the first songs I renember liking in my lifetime and to think I’ve lived through everything in this song now is so wild. The fire will burn on, and on, and on.
