Calgary Flames defenseman Noah Hanifin warms up before an NHL hockey game against the Chicago Blackhawks, Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, in Chicago.

The Golden Knights are closing in on making one of the biggest splashes of the trade deadline, acquiring defenseman Noah Hanifin from the Calgary Flames, sources have confirmed to the Sun.

Sportsnet was first to report that a potential deal was incoming.

Hanifin, 27, is in the final year of a six-year contract at $29.7 million (average annual value of $4.95 million). Discussions of a contract extension have been discussed, but nothing has been finalized, according to sources.

There is a possibility Calgary will retain some of Hanifin’s salary, according to TSN.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
