Maggie Gyllenhaal Just Eclipsed Her Brother Jake in the Style Department

Whether he’s kicking ass in blue jeans on screen or stepping out in killer blazers off of it, Jake Gyllenhaal has had some pretty spicy recent menswear moments. This week, however, Jake’s older sister Maggie Gyllenhaal proved herself to be the biggest hypebeast in the family.

Gyllenhaal’s style normally gravitates more toward flowy dresses and power suits, but in New York City yesterday, The Lost Daughter filmmaker went down a deeply streetwear-coded route instead. Spotted on the set of The Bride, her next directorial effort, Gyllenhaal wore the bandana hoodie by Kapital up top. Released as part of the Japanese label’s Autumn-Winter 2023 collection, it’s covered in a mismatched paisley pattern and is considered to be something of a holy grail by fans of, well… good, solid hoodies. Plus, that whole bandana print is a Kapital signature known (and loved) by menswear heads the world over.

Down south, she jumped into a pair of light wash blue denim jeans, and the Salomon XT-4 OG, specifically in the black colorway. Fitted with a full-length “agile chassis skeleton” for added structure and support, this sneaker also comes equipped with the Quicklace system and a dual-density foam midsole. It’s the kinda shoe that you wear if you’re into gorpcore but you also don’t want to be in everyone’s face about it. A gateway gorp trainer, if you will—and one that’s become synonymous with natty wine bros and art directors in any city with absurdly overpriced apartments.

And best of all: Maggie Gyllenhall wears it extremely well. “There’s no precedent for what a woman director wears,” she said in a Neiman Marcus Women’s History Month panel back in 2022. “There’s a little precedent, but we get to make it up. So do we dress like men? How much does femininity play into it? How much does sexuality play into it?”

Seems like she’s answered her own questions with a sick hoodie and even sicker sneakers, and we approve wholeheartedly.
