State Championship - Gorman vs. Reno

Sam Morris / Las Vegas Sun

Bishop Gorman head coach Sheryl Krmpotich calls a play during their Division I state championship game against Reno Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at the Orleans. Reno won 52-39.

Bishop Gorman’s girls basketball program is bringing back a familiar coach to lead the team.

Sheryl Krmpotich, who led the program to state championships from 2006-2010, is returning to the Gaels’ bench, school officials said this afternoon.

Affectionately called “Coach K,” Krmpotich amassed 500 wins over 18 years as head coach through the 2016 season.

Krmpotich, who is also head of Gorman’s physical education and health departments, has remained active in coaching through working various local clinics.

“We are excited to welcome her back to the sidelines and look forward to what her many years of high-level basketball experience brings to the Lady Gaels,” Gorman officials said in a statement.

Gorman is hoping Krmpotich’s hire will have a similar impact as to a coaching change made last year with its baseball program. Coach Chris Sheff returned after a 12-year absence and this spring led Gorman to the state title.
